There's also a Night mode which reduces bass when someone in your house might be sleeping. Sports places emphasis on both commentary volume and "immersion" and, lastly, the Neutral setting has a flat frequency curve with no "sound coloring."Īnd, if for some reason you need to do so, there's an option to turn the Ambeo tech off entirely. The News setting pushes more volume to the center speakers and amps up the middle frequencies to focus on voices. More specifically, Movie increases bass, treble and the "immersive effect" while Music has less low-end for a more neutral tone. These are handy when switching types of content, and they make a noticeable difference in the overall sound for each one. Keep the included remote or your phone closeby because those are the two ways you can access from the couch the Ambeo Soundbar's acoustic presets: Movie, Music, News, Sports and Neutral. From there, you're ready to blast whatever TV show, movie or music your heart desires. It only takes a couple minutes, and, yes, there's some noise involved. If you're not one for reading instructions, the display on the front of the speaker itself and Sennheiser's Smart Control app do a decent job of walking you through the process. Once you've found enough space to put this thing, you'll want to do that calibration before you use it. Around front, there's a microphone input for the included mic, which you use to calibrate the Ambeo Soundbar to your living room. If you prefer wireless connectivity, the Ambeo Soundbar has Bluetooth and Chromecast, both handy for beaming audio from your phone. The soundbar offers a subwoofer pre-out (mono-RCA) in case you feel the need to add more low-end tone to the setup. There's also a USB port for any service needs or updates and an Ethernet jack for wired internet. For wired connections, there are three HDMI inputs (v.2.0a), one HDMI output (v.2.1 eARC), an optical input and an aux input (stereo RCA). There's also an Ambeo symbol on the right side of the speaker's face that lights up when the audio tech is in use.Ĭonnectivity is an area where the Ambeo Soundbar really shines. On the front, there's a small display that lets you know which connection you're using and flashes updates when you switch modes. All of these options are also on the soundbar remote. That multifunction option, you can use to pause (single press) or skip tracks (double or triple press), and hitting both that and the source button beside it accesses the soundbar's Bluetooth. On top, there are controls for mute, volume, Ambeo on/off, a multifunction button, source and power. And that's a real perk of the Ambeo Soundbar: you get truly immersive audio without having to position a group of five (or more) speakers around your living room. The system has a frequency response of 30 Hz to 20 kHz and offers the equivalent of 5.1.4 surround sound from a single unit. More specifically, six 4-inch long throw woofers, five 1-inch tweeters and two upward-firing 3.5-inch mid-range drivers. And while we're on the topic, this beast houses a total of 13 drivers. The sides angle outward from front to back, so it can accommodate the side-firing speakers. The Ambeo Soundbar isn't a rectangular box, either. Sennheiser does offer a wall mount, but I'd hesitate to trust it with something this heavy - and this expensive. If you have a shallow mantle for your soundbar, you'll want to measure before you buy this. I tried to set this up at a family member's house, and it didn't fit. Thankfully, I had enough space, though I did have to put something under my TV so the Ambeo Soundbar wasn't blocking part of the screen. Due to the increased size and weight, you have to plan carefully for where you're going to put it. It dwarfs the Sonos Playbar I use in my living room. Not only is it way bigger than most soundbars in every dimension, it also weighs just over 40 pounds (18.5 kg). The first thing you notice about the Ambeo Soundbar is its size: It's huge.
